Who I am
This website is run by Danny James, an independent web developer. I'm the data controller for the personal information collected here. You can contact me about privacy at any time at info@dannyjames.dev.
What I collect and why
Messages you send me
If you message me on Facebook Messenger or by email, I receive your name, contact details and whatever you choose to tell me. I use this only to reply to you and, if we work together, to deliver the project. Legal basis: taking steps at your request before entering into a contract, and my legitimate interest in replying to enquiries.
The AI chat assistant
The chat on this site is answered by an AI assistant, not by me in real time. What you type is sent to an AI provider (DeepSeek) to generate the reply. Your conversation is kept in your own browser for the current visit only and cleared when you close the tab. I don't store chat conversations on my servers. The AI provider may process data outside the UK under its own terms, so please don't share sensitive personal information in the chat. If you want me to see your enquiry, the chat helps you send it to me on Messenger. Legal basis: my legitimate interest in answering questions from visitors.
Website hosting
The site is hosted by Netlify, which records standard technical information such as IP addresses and browser type in server logs to keep the site secure and running. Legal basis: legitimate interest in operating a secure website.
Advertising and analytics cookies
With your permission only, this site uses the Meta Pixel (from Meta, the company behind Facebook and Instagram) and may use Google Analytics. These set cookies that help me understand which adverts and pages lead to enquiries, and let Meta show my adverts to relevant people. They are only switched on if you click Accept on the cookie banner. Legal basis: your consent, which you can withdraw at any time.
Essential storage
The site stores a few small settings in your browser, such as whether you've seen the welcome message, your chat for the current visit and your cookie choice. These don't track you and are needed for the site to work as you'd expect.

Who I share information with
I don't sell your information. It is only shared with the services that make this site work: Netlify (hosting), DeepSeek (chat replies), Meta (Messenger and, with consent, advertising measurement) and Google (analytics, with consent).
How long I keep it
Enquiries that don't lead to work are deleted within 12 months. Client project records are kept for up to 6 years for accounting and legal reasons.
Your rights
Under UK data protection law you can ask to see, correct or delete the information I hold about you, object to how I use it, or withdraw consent. Email info@dannyjames.dev and I'll respond within one month. If you're unhappy with how I've handled your information, you can complain to the Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk.
